STEPHEN'S COLLEGE OF FILM MUSIC


Music Theory 3 is an advanced level music theory course. In this course, the student will learn Semiquavers, Demisemiquavers, the concept of Quaver triplets, Semiquaver triplets, Demisemiquaver triplets and the concept of duplets. Learning to Write in the swing or swung rhythm. Open Score and closed score writing. The student will also learn and masters the art of transposing the music to different intervals, Pentatonic major and minor, the concept of modes and its application, the harmonic sequences and the tone row. The study of musical forms, in which the student will learn the theory and principles of Binary form, Ternary form, Rondo form, Rondo-Sonata form and Sonata form. After successfully completing this course, the Student will be ready to take Tonal Harmony course.

  • Semiquavers and Demisemiquavers.
  • Quaver triplets, Semiquaver triplets, and demisemiquaver triplets.
  • Duplets.
  • Irregular time signatures and unusual time signatures.
  • Hemiola.
  • Compound intervals.
  • Arpeggios in Dominant Seventh chords and diminished seventh chords.
  • Cadences.
  • Open and closed score writing.
  • Transposing.
  • Elementary Four Parts writing.
  • The Harmonic Sequence.
  • Modal Melodies.
  • The Tone row.
  • Final project.

    Prerequisites

  • Age 16+
  • The student must have completed the Music Theory 1 and 2 Courses.
  • Required Textbooks

  • The AB Guide to Music Theory by ABRSM.
  • A Handbook of Musical Knowledge by James Murray Brown.
  • Trinty College of Music, London, Theory of Music work Books Grade 5, 6, 7 and 8.
